Surgical Procedures
Hand Surgery
Hand surgery is a very specialised field. This can be conveniently broken down into traumatic hand surgery and acquired hand conditions. Is not widely appreciated that hand surgery is performed by plastic and reconstructive surgeons. Dr Magnusson has had a large volume of experience with surgery of the hand and still performs this surgery in his current practice.
The commonest injuries treated by Dr Magnusson include fingertip crush injuries which are very common in children, lacerations involving tendon, nerve and blood vessels and injuries involving skin loss on the hand or fingers. Understandably, many of these injuries are sustained at work or with power tools at home. Dr Magnusson also treats patients who have amputated parts of the hand and if conditions are favourable will attempt microsurgical replantation/re-attachment.
The common types of acquired or developed hand conditions that Dr Magnusson treats include swellings of the hand, ganglion, carpal tunnel syndrome and Dupuytren's contracture.
Hand surgery is a complex field because of the intricacy of the hand. This surgery needs to be performed by a competent and trained surgeon in association with an experienced hand therapist to maximise the outcome from surgery and to minimise any potential for enduring stiffness.
